Mama June’s 11-Year-Old Granddaughter Wants To Remain Living w/ Her Despite Custody Petition From Former Stepfather
Reality TV mom Mama June is gearing up for a custody battle against her late daughter’s ex-husband.
Court documents obtained by In Touch recently confirmed that the Honey Boo Boo star is fighting to keep parental rights over her granddaughter Kaitlyn Shannon, as her former step-father Michael Cardwell is also making a bid for custody.
As you may know, Mama June’s daughter Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell sadly succumbed to her battle with breast cancer in December of last year, leaving behind two children Kaitlyn Shannon and Kylee Cardwell. While the latter has remained full-time with her father Michael Cardwell following her mother’s passing, there have been ongoing tensions about the best residence for 11-year-old Kaitlyn, who Anna had from a previous relationship.
Reportedly, Michael Cardwell, who was married to Anna from 2014 – 2017, argued that he helped raise Kaitlyn since she was a baby. Michael proposed to Anna in 2013 when Kaitlyn was a year old, and strongly feels the sisters shouldn’t be separated. However, Mama June was awarded temporary custody of Kaitlyn following her daughter’s death.
In response to his argument, Mama June and Kaitlyn both petitioned the court to allow the minor to continue living with her grandmother. Reportedly, Mama June claimed that Michael was abusive to her late daughter and granddaughter when they lived with him, writing in the document:
“During his marriage to Anna, [Michael] frequently physically abused Anna and the child and it would not be in the child’s best interests to be in [Michael’s] care and control,”
Michael has since denied the claims through his lawyer and reversely alleged that Anna and Mama June had a “sorted” relationship. He suggested that his ex-wife wouldn’t want her daughter to live with her mother. The young lady, however, has thoughts of her own and made them perfectly clear to the court. She wrote in a motion:
“I am electing and hereby expressing my desire and intent to reside primarily with my maternal grandmother, June Shannon. I do not wish to have set visitation with Michael Cardwell.”
She added:
“I also with to speak to the Judge to inform the court of my wishes.”
A judge has yet to rule on the matter.
