Zoë Kravitz Shares Regrets Of Moving In w/ Dad Lenny Kravitz Following His Divorce From Mom Lisa Bonet Because He ‘Wasn’t Even There’

Zoë Kravitz is reflecting on her childhood, including the painful decision to move in with her father after her parents’ divorce.

The 35-year-old actress candidly discussed the emotional impact of her decision to leave her mother, Lisa Bonet, and move in with her father, Lenny Kravitz, after their split in 1991, in an interview with Esquire.

Despite the move being intended as a fresh start, Zoë Kravitz admitted that it was “very hurtful” to leave her mother behind:

“I think it was very hurtful that I moved away from her to be with my dad and my dad wasn’t even there.”

After the move, Lenny Kravitz was often absent due to his touring schedule and the house’s construction, leaving Zoë Kravitz to navigate her new life largely on her own.

She continued,

“I just wish I had been able to appreciate what she [Lisa Bonet] was doing for me [at the time]. She was so focused on preserving my innocence. My creativity. Because she knew what the world is—that you don’t get that back.”

Today, as Kravitz looks back on her past, she acknowledges finding herself in situations she didn’t need to be in, underscoring a realization that,

“You want to grow up so fast, and then you get out there and you realize, oh s***.”

Moving to New York with her father had its positives. It gave Kravitz a sense of belonging at the Rudolf Steiner School, where she felt she finally fit in among her peers. “It was weirdos like me,” she recalled, appreciating the community that matched her own experiences.

Reflecting on her childhood before New York, Kravitz described those years as “awkward” and her struggle to fit in at exclusive schools where her mixed heritage made her stand out:

“People were confused, how are you Jewish if you’re Black? If both of your parents are Black, how are you half white?”

Another comment Zoë often received was,

“‘Your hair doesn’t look wet when you come out of the pool—that’s weird.’”

To blend in, Zoë explained that she tried to minimize her Blackness but was still hurt by others’ comments.

Those days are long gone, as Zoë Kravitz has since come into her own, achieving significant success as an actress, singer, and model.

She continues to evolve and reflect on herself, as demonstrated by her insight after her 2021 divorce from Karl Glusman, when she said,

“It really is less about him and more about me learning how to ask myself questions about who I am and still learning who I am, and that being okay. That’s the journey I’m on right now.”

Zoë has moved on and is now engaged to actor Channing Tatum, and it seems her relationship with her father has continued to flourish, as he recently praised Tatum, saying:

“He’s a great guy. We get on really well. We have our own relationship as well. We hang out. We talk. He’s a very soulful human being. He was raised well. He has manners and class.”
