Marques Houston Speaks On Being Called ‘Underrated’ Throughout His Singing Career: ‘I’m Just Tired Of It All’
Marques Houston is sharing his full truth in his latest album, The Best Worst Year Ever.
On August 30, the 43-year-old released his 8th studio album as a solo artist and addressed naysayers who still doubt his talent despite the success of his career, which has spanned over 3 decades. Marques Houston is debatably most known for portraying Roger Evans in the 90s sitcom Sister, Sister. In addition to having a hit series under his belt, he gained notoriety as a member of the R&B boy band Immature (IMx).

Given his impressive résumé, it’s safe to say that Marques Houston has seen all sides of Hollywood. In a song on his newest project titled “Tired of Hollywood,” Marques dives into the industry’s good, bad, and ugly sides. Explaining the track and career criticism he’s received over the years during an interview with PEOPLE, Marques said,
“I’m speaking my truth on how I feel like I’ve been treated as an artist and the things that I’ve done throughout my career. I’ve been called underrated more than I’ve been called successful. I’m just tired of it all. Now as a man, I don’t need it either. I’m happy where I’m at, I’m financially stable, I have a great family and I don’t need it. That song really speaks volumes to me as a person and as an artist.”
He continued,
“Nowadays with the news and this and that and social media, it’s good to just be positive. Sometimes you just got to lock yourself in the house and be with your family and your friends and your loved ones.”
Marques’ singing career isn’t the only thing he’s faced criticism over. As previously covered, he’s been in the hot seat over the years due to the age gap between himself and his wife. Reportedly, when he married Miya back in 2020 he was 39 and she was only 19. During a previously aired ‘Uncensored’ episode on TVOne, he tackled the backlash head-on and said,
“Me and my wife’s situation is a little different. How we met through mutual friends and everything like that. When I met my wife, she was seventeen. So, no [real] conversation… no [real] connection until, you know, she was of age. People don’t understand it, and I got a lot of backlash for marrying someone that was nineteen.”

Marques and Miya seem unbothered by the public’s opinion of their relationship. The love birds appear to be happy and they share two children.
