‘DWTS’ Draws Mixed Opinions As Public Reacts To Convicted Felon Anna Delvey Performing w/ An Ankle Monitor
Internet users have varied thoughts about convicted felon Anna Delvey’s Dancing With The Stars premiere.
In case you’re unfamiliar, Russian native Anna ‘Delvey’ Sorokin made her debut on season 33 of the former ABC now Disney+ series yesterday (Tuesday, September 17th). Her routine kicked off with a camera shot of the scam artist’s bejeweled ankle monitor and ended with another angle highlighting the government-issued device.
Reacting to the performance, some commenters disapproved of the 33-year-old’s casting on the show, arguing that people who have committed serious crimes should not be rewarded. In case you’re unfamiliar, Anna Delvey’s celebrity status stems from her time posing as a wealthy heiress, and scamming members of upper-class New York’s social and art scenes from 2013 to 2017.
During this time, Delvey deceived major financial institutions, banks, hotels, and individuals out of $275,000. She was ultimately charged with attempted grand larceny, larceny in the second degree, and theft of services, and was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison. After serving two years, however, she was remanded into the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation to Germany and was released on a $10,000 bail in October of 2022. That same year, Netflix paid Delvey $320,000 for the rights to her life story and developed it into the series Inventing Anna.
Though some were not amused by Delvey’s appearance on DWTS, others claimed that they had no choice but to support the scammer, who was titled as an “entrepreneur” and “fashionista” by the show.
