Idris Elba’s Wife Sabrina On ‘Bullying’ She Experienced After Marrying Actor: ‘I Remember Thinking ‘Wow, Even My Own People Are Picking Me Apart”
Sabrina Dhowre Elba didn’t have the easiest time adjusting to fame after her relationship with Idris Elba was put into the spotlight in 2017. During a recent appearance on the Awf the Record podcast, the model and entrepreneur opened up about the criticism she received, especially from the Black community, the media and Idris Elba’s female fans.
She recalled,
“I was like, ‘I’ve never seen a picture of the back of my head like that.’ I was like ‘Stop showing me all these different sides of myself. It’s making me really sort of analyze and nitpick things.’ It was a huge moment of, ‘Am I good? Can I even do this?'”
She added,
“I was met with so much kind of judgment and criticism. I grew up in a very supportive community of friends and people, and I was just like, well, I didn’t realize so many people are so angry that this guy got married. And it felt a little bit like bullying at first…I remember thinking, wow, even my own people are picking me apart.”
She said Idris Elba urged her not to read the comments, and her mother helped her embrace her platform and confidence.
