Jackson, Mississippi Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba Indicted In Corruption Probe
Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba has been indicted by a federal grand jury in a corruption probe, following an FBI sting operation. Undercover agents posing as real estate developers invited the mayor to a fundraiser in Florida in April, claiming to support his 2025 reelection campaign. The agents, with the help of Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens, arranged for campaign contributions to be funneled to Lumumba.
The sting involved a hotel project in downtown Jackson, with the agents submitting a proposal to meet the city’s needs. Lumumba is accused of directing a city employee to change a bid deadline to favor the undercover agents. This operation has led to charges against other local officials, including former Councilwoman Angelique Lee, who pleaded guilty to bribery.
Lumumba denies the charges, calling the prosecution politically motivated. He plans to defend himself in court and has no plans to resign. The mayor, who faces reelection in 2025, is set for arraignment on Thursday.
The FBI’s investigation into Jackson city politics, including past controversies, has been ongoing for years.
