Jaleel White Reflects On Feeling Left Out Of Black Culture: ‘If It’s Not A Hood Story, It’s Not A Black Story’
Jaleel White is opening up about his experience navigating Hollywood and feeling like an outsider in the broader culture of “Blackness.”
Speaking at the Wilmington Library, the Family Matters star shared,
“Being a part of the TGIF brand sometimes makes you feel like you don’t completely belong in the pantheon of blackness.” He continued, “Blackness has been treated as a very monolithic experience in entertainment. You know, if it’s not a hood story, it’s not a black story. Sometimes I feel left out of that.”

White went on to point out how shows like Martin and Living Single are often viewed as more representative of Black culture than Family Matters.
