Apple Settles $95M Siri Privacy Lawsuit Over Alleged Eavesdropping
Apple has agreed to a $95 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit accusing the company of using Siri to eavesdrop on users without their consent. Filed in Oakland, California, the case alleged that Siri recorded conversations on iPhones and other devices for over a decade, even without the trigger phrase “Hey, Siri,” and shared some recordings with advertisers.
The settlement, which admits no wrongdoing, must still be approved by a federal judge. If approved, consumers with eligible devices from September 2014 through 2023 could claim up to $20 per Siri-enabled device, capped at five devices per person. Lawyers estimate only 3–5% of eligible consumers will file claims.
The payout is a fraction of Apple’s $705 billion in profits since 2014 and significantly lower than the $1.5 billion potential liability had the case gone to trial. Attorneys may seek nearly $30 million in fees from the settlement fund.
