Jamie Foxx Recalls Samuel L. Jackson Urging Leonardo DiCaprio To Use N-Word In “Django Unchained”
Jamie Foxx is looking back on his experience filming “Django Unchained” and shared how co-star Leonardo DiCaprio struggled with the script’s heavy use of the N-word.
Jamie revealed during a Vanity Fair interview,
“The subject matter. The N-word, specifically. Leo had a hard time saying the N-word. We’re doing a read, and Leo says, ‘Hey, guys. Cut! I just can’t do this. This is not me.’”
According to Jamie, Samuel L Jackson stepped in to encourage Leo:
“Sam goes, ‘Say that sh*t, motherf*cker! It’s just another Tuesday.”

Foxx went on to explain how he helped Leo embody the role of Calvin Candie, a slave owner:
“I told Leo that in slavery days we would never talk to each other. I’m not your friend. I’m not Jamie Foxx. I’m Django. You won’t really be able to play that character until you understand what slavery is about.”
Leo eventually tapped into the darkness of his character, with Foxx adding, “The next day, I see Leo, and I say what’s up to him. He don’t speak to me. He’s ready. Everybody started digging in.”
