Dwyane Wade Opens Up For The First Time About Having 40% Of His Kidney Removed Due To Cancerous Tumor
In a heartfelt revelation, Dwyane Wade shared for the first time that he had a cancerous tumor removed from his kidney in December 2023.
The 43-year-old opened up about the ordeal on the latest episode of his podcast, The Why with Dwyane Wade, explaining that he initially went for a check-up due to ongoing health concerns— including stomach issues, cramps, and a slower-than-usual urine stream.
Wade also mentioned that he was inspired by his father’s battle with prostate cancer to insist on a full-body scan. The scan revealed the “shocking” tumor diagnosis, which required immediate attention.

He stated:
“And the doctor was like, ‘You need to have kidney surgery.”
Wade revealed that he decided to move forward with the surgery after double-checking the diagnosis with multiple doctors. The surgeons had to remove 40% of his right kidney to prevent the cancer from spreading. Before making the decision, the Hall of Famer reflected on how this health scare became the “weakest” moment of his life, saying:
“My own journey to have that surgery, I think it was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak… That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life.”
Despite the difficult battle, Wade found strength in his family, noting:
“What I saw in the midst of me going through my illness, I saw my family—who may not always talk, may not always agree—show up for me and be there for me. And in that process, in my weakness, I found strength in my family.”
