Trump Proposes To End $64 Million Funding For Howard University Hospital Project
The Trump administration proposes cutting a $64 million payment to Howard University, stating the funds—originally for hospital construction—are no longer needed now that the project is complete.
Howard remains the only federally chartered HBCU. This comes just days after Donald Trump launched a White House initiative on HBCUs to “deliver high-quality education to a growing number of students.”
When asked about federal funding concerns, Donald Trump told NewsNation, “I got them more money than they ever dreamt possible, and they’re in great shape now.”
He cited a 2019 bipartisan bill securing $250 million annually for HBCUs, adding, “They have long-term financing. Nobody did that but Donald Trump.” Despite such claims, HBCUs continue to face funding disparities.
A 2022 Forbes report found Black land-grant universities were underfunded by over $12 billion in 30 years.
