Karmelo Anthony Indicted For First-Degree Murder In High School Track Meet Stabbing

Karmelo Anthony, 18, was indicted by a Collin County grand jury for first-degree murder after allegedly stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in April.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said his team spent weeks presenting evidence to the grand jury.

“We know this case has struck a deep nerve… here in Collin County and beyond. That’s understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core. But the justice system works best when it moves with steadiness and with principle. That’s what we’re committed to. And that’s exactly what this case deserves.”

Willis acknowledged Metcalf’s family in the announcement, asking the community to keep them “in your thoughts… and if you’re willing, in your prayers as well.”

The stabbing happened on April 2 at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, during a Frisco ISD track meet. Surveillance footage showed the altercation near the bleachers, followed by chaos. Paramedics struggled to reach Metcalf in the stands, and the knife used was later found nearby.

Anthony was arrested shortly after the incident. According to the affidavit, he admitted to the stabbing, telling an officer, “I’m not alleged, I did it.” He claimed Metcalf put his hands on him after being told not to, and later reportedly asked officers if the incident could be considered self-defense.

Anthony’s attorney, Mike Howard, released a statement following the indictment, saying:

“Karmelo and his family are confident in the justice system and the people of Collin County to be fair and impartial. Of course, Karmelo looks forward to his day in court.”

Anthony has been on house arrest since his release on a reduced bond on April 14. If convicted, he faces 5 to 99 years or life in prison.
