Nelly Says His First Time Dating Ashanti Was Like Taking ‘A Test Drive’ Before Buying A Car

Nelly is opening up about what made things click the second time around with Ashanti.

While promoting their new Peacock reality series, which TheJasmineBrand exclusively revealed was in the works, the two reflected on how spending 10 years apart gave them the clarity they needed.

“What you thought mattered a lot… you realize that’s not really as big of a deal as you thought it would be,” Nelly told PEOPLE. “It’s just growth.”

In a moment that had Ashanti laughing, Nelly added:

“Everybody don’t get a chance to, if you could say, take a test drive. It’s like when people say, ‘You should always test drive a car before you buy it.’ I hate to minimize that because this is real life… but it’s almost the defining factor. We had a chance to test drive a relationship to understand that, ‘Yo, that car was the best thing I had… Fire it back up, baby.’”

Ashanti co-signed the metaphor, saying:

“It’s a good one.”

If you recall, the couple first dated from 2003 to 2013. They rekindled their romance in 2023 and are now married with an 11-month-old son.
