Akon Responds To Reports That His $6 Billion Senegal City Project Is Over: ‘It’s Happening’
Akon is shutting down reports that his plans for a multi-billion-dollar city in Senegal have been scrapped.
“It’s happening. Akon City is under attack,” he said on Way Up with Angela Yee. “The concept of what this dream means to Africa is so big…it’s shaking up a lot of agendas in Africa.”
The singer and entrepreneur addressed the criticism after officials from Sapco Senegal, the agency overseeing the development zone, recently declared, “That project no longer exists,” citing missed deadlines and payments.

However, Akon claimed it’s just taking time.
“It takes 12 to 15 months to build a house. We’re talking about a city with high rises, major structures… studies alone took two and a half years.”
He also suggested others may want to see the project fail:
“I’m realizing there’s a lot of agendas benefiting if this project doesn’t happen.”
