Breonna Taylor’s Aunt Arrested During Protest As Cop In Deadly Raid Gets 33 Months

Bianca Austin, the aunt of Breonna Taylor, was arrested outside a Louisville courthouse Monday (July 21) amid protests before the sentencing of former officer Brett Hankison.

Austin was one of four people taken into custody after protesters jumped on cars near the Gene Snyder Federal Building. According to Louisville police, Austin was in the middle of the intersection “clapping her hands” and blocking vehicles.

Louisville Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Matthew Sanders said,

“What we saw today in front of the courthouse in the street was not safe, acceptable, or legal. Creating confrontation, kicking vehicles, or otherwise creating an unsafe environment will not be tolerated.”

Austin was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing a highway. She is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday (July 22).

Hankison, who was fired after the 2020 no-knock raid that led to Breonna Taylor’s death, was found guilty last year of violating her civil rights. He was sentenced to 33 months in prison despite the Justice Department recommending just one day.
