Trump Suggests Chicago & New York City Could Be Next For Federal Crime Crackdown
Donald Trump wants to expand his federal takeover.
The president hinted Friday (Aug. 22) that Chicago and New York could be next for a federal anti-crime effort, following ongoing operations in Washington, D.C.
Speaking in the Oval Office during an announcement about the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Trump said, “I really am honored that the National Guard has done such an incredible job working with the police [in D.C.]. And we haven’t had to bring in the regular military, which we’re willing to do if we have to. And after we do this, we’ll go to another location, and we’ll make it safe, also.”
He then mentioned Chicago, saying, “We’ll straighten that one out probably next, that’ll be our next one after this.” He added that New York would likely follow.

It is not yet clear how the federal government could intervene in cities outside D.C., given that they don’t have the same authority. State National Guard units are under the control of governors, and Trump would not have power over city police departments in Illinois or New York.
