The tragedy occurred during a back-to-school Mass at Annunciation Catholic School on Wednesday (Aug. 27). 13-year-old Javen Willis, an eighth grader, shared with the Today show what it was like inside the church as g*nfire erupted. While some of his classmates believed the gunshots were fireworks, Javen knew something was off.

Thankfully, the young teen trusted his gut. “I prayed. I realized I can’t just focus on myself. I want to keep everybody as safe as possible,” Javen said. When sh*ts came through the windows, Javen dropped under a pew with friends. He urged them to stay low and calm.
