Lil’ Wayne Talks Hurricane Katrina & Fatherhood + Hot Boys & Drake Perform At ‘Lil Weezyana’ [VIDEO]
With the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approaching, New Orleans is still in the healing process. Taking place on August 29, 2005, the storm destroyed homes, displaced residents and killed thousands. Earlier this week, New Orleans native Lil Wayne sat down with ESPN’s Michael Smith for an heartfelt interview on Hurricane Katrina, the upcoming Lil WeezyAna Festival (that took place this weekend) and fatherhood. Peep the excerpts below.
Where he was and what was his reaction to the news of Hurricane Katrina:
I was in Houston the night Hurricane Katrina hit. The lights went out alright. Ya’ll a be aight. And once you see what happened and how it happened ya know. I’m sorry but I ain’t never seen mother nature do that.
What he lost because of the hurricane:
We lost our little cousin Latavis. It was him, my grand-mom, and my little brother Mal. Everybody hear me talk about Marly G all the time when I’m rapping that’s my little brother. They were holding onto a pole and they kinda made a decision to umm, I don’t know how it went but to let grandma hold onto the pole. And Tavis let go. And Mal stayed to make sure grandma was okay. Those types of decisions were being made. So anything else I lost don’t even matter.
How he feels 10 years later:
It’s mixed emotions. 10 years later, I’m sorry to say its no change. It’s what they, and when I say they its a quote on quote. “They” meaning I don’t know who “they” are. But it’s what “they” wanted. That’s what I see. Move who we don’t want, out and bring what we want in. It isn’t a who, it’s what they want in, money. And we as in quote un quote “me and my people” we scare that money away that’s what they figure. So you know wash them out.
