Dove Apologizes For Racially Insensitive Ad
Dove Apologizes For Ad
Dove is making headlines. The soap and popular beauty brand is under fire for what some consider a racially insensitive Facebook ad. Over the weekend, the company released a statement admitting that it,
Missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color.
The ad in question featured a black woman removing a brown shirt and appearing to transform into a white woman removing a similar shirt.
Dove posted multiple apologies on social media and said in a statement,
Dove is committed to representing the beauty of diversity. In an image we posted this week, we missed the mark in thoughtfully representing women of color and we deeply regret the offense that it has caused. The feedback that has been shared is important to us and we’ll use it to guide us in the future.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that Dove has made similar headlines.
In 2011, Dove released a body wash ad showing three women with a range of skin tones standing in a row, the word “before” above the head of the woman with darker skin and “after” above the head of the woman with lighter skin. Dove released a statement addressing the controversy, stating,
All three women are intended to demonstrate the ‘after’ product benefit. We do not condone any activity or imagery that intentionally insults any audience.
