Nationwide Cyclospora Outbreak Leaves Health Officials Scrambling To Identify Contaminated Food Source

Health officials are racing to identify the source of a growing Cyclospora outbreak that has sickened thousands of people across the U.S., with investigators warning the foodborne parasite has proven unusually difficult to trace. The outbreak has affected more than 30 states, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that spreads through contaminated food or water and can cause cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness known for triggering severe watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, bloating, fatigue, and weight loss. Symptoms often don’t appear until about a week after exposure, making it difficult for patients to remember exactly what they ate. Health officials are interviewing patients, reviewing grocery receipts and loyalty card purchases, and tracing produce through complex supply chains in hopes of identifying a common source.

Federal investigators have linked shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia to part of the outbreak. Taco Bell has since stopped using the suspected lettuce nationwide and switched suppliers. However, officials stress that the broader investigation remains active and additional contaminated foods may also be involved.

Doctors advise anyone experiencing prolonged watery diarrhea, severe stomach pain, or signs of dehydration to seek medical attention, as Cyclospora infections require specific antibiotics and may not be detected through routine stool testing unless the parasite is specifically requested. In the meantime, experts recommend thoroughly washing fresh produce, practicing good hand hygiene, and staying informed as health officials continue working to pinpoint the outbreak’s source.
