Serena Williams Gets Her Own Nike Sneaker
Serena Williams has nabbed her own sneaker. Williams, who returned to competition at this week’s French Open, will receive the limited edition Nike Blazer SW in her honor. The sneaker features an all-white leather exterior with Serena’s signature black W logo on the laces and tongue of the shoe. Nike says the color combination is an ode
to the greatest athlete of all time’s quest to continue to rewrite the history books when it comes to defining sport dominance.
Serena’s sneaker will be released on May 24th in limited numbers through the company’s SNKRS app, retailing for $120.00. Williams return has sparked controversy. According to reports, she was not given a seed for the competition. French Open organizers explained,
This year again, tournament officials will establish the list and ranking of the women’s seeds based on the WTA ranking. Consequently, [the seeds] will reflect this week’s world ranking.
Serena is currently ranked as the 453rd player in the world, after taking leave last year to give birth to her first child. Without a seed, she will face the top players early in the competition, complicating her chances for a title. The French Open draw is Thursday and competition begins this Sunday.
