Melyssa Ford, Karrine Steffans & Buffie The Body Relive Being A Video Girl In ‘Vixen’
BET has launched a new digital documentary series called “Vixen” which chronicles the ins and outs of the video vixen/stripper culture in the hip-hop industry from the late 90s to the early 2000s.
Stories and perspectives about the reckless and risqué culture were heard from the women who actually lived it.
Interviews are captured from former video models like Melyssa Ford, Buffie the Body and Yaris Sanchez, and the author of the New York Times best seller, “Confessions of a Video Vixen”, Karrine Steffans.
The docu showcases the positive/negative side of being a vixen. Stories about casting calls, BET’s Uncut, video budget cuts, and the money vixens were getting paid to be sexy in videos were confessed from the mouth’s of video directors and hip-hop artist managers. As time went on, it seemed like everyone in the industry overlooked the misogyny, aesthetic preferences, and how women were
treated like disposable sex objects.
Steffans is considered the woman who broke that glass ceiling in hip-hop by revealing all the lies, secrets, and sex hidden within the industry.
The series has launched three 10-11 minute videos speaking on the aspect of the hip-hop industry that was often. Check out one of the episodes below.
