Woman Claims GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs Caused Her To Lose Her Eyesight, Wants Warning
Added To Labels

A Georgia woman who says she lost vision in her right eye after starting the GLP-1 drug Wegovy is pushing for stronger warnings on the medications.

Diane Wirth, a former Grady Memorial Hospital nurse practitioner, says she woke up just weeks after beginning the drug in 2025 and suddenly couldn’t see out of her right eye. Doctors diagnosed her with NAION, sometimes called an “eye stroke,” which is caused by reduced blood flow to the optic nerve. “Once it happens, it’s permanent. There’s no going back,” Wirth said.

According to Wirth, she was never warned about the potential for blindness and is now part of a federal multidistrict lawsuit alleging that drugmakers failed to adequately warn patients. While regulators in Europe, Canada and Australia have added or updated warnings regarding NAION, the #FDA has not added one to U.S. labels and says it is continuing to evaluate the potential safety issue. Wirth says losing her eyesight also cost her her job and independence, adding, “If I would’ve read that there was a possibility I could lose my vision, I would’ve never taken this drug.”
