Season 4 Of ‘Insecure’ Won’t Premiere Until 2020

There’s keeping your audience waiting with anticipation—and just plain waiting period. Such is the case for fans of the hit HBO series Insecure, which will keep them waiting much longer than they ever could have expected.

Generally, most TV shows take some sort of hiatus between seasons, it’s normal and an industry rule of thumb. Network shows usually take a three-four month break and return in fall, while basic cable can follow the same timeline or usually return in a year. However, there are also cable shows, both premium and basic, that take years to return between seasons (here’s looking at you, Atlanta)—and Issa Rae’s hit comedy-drama Insecure has just been added to the list.

As she celebrates her big screen turn in the comedy Little, which just hit theaters, Rae is also out here breaking hearts of Insecure fans everywhere with the news that the series won’t return until 2020. Why, you ask? Well, in the time between season three and now, Rae has piled up a host of new film projects that won’t allow her to solely focus on crafting a fourth season of the L.A.-based series.

In addition to Little, Rae also has the upcoming romantic drama The Photograph with Atlanta star Lakeith Stanfield, the murder mystery rom-com The Lovebirds with Kumail Nanjiani and co-starring in HBO’s The Dolls alongside award-winning actress Laura Dern. She’s also developing A Black Lady Sketch Show for comedienne Robin Thede and she just inked a multi-picture deal with Columbia Pictures to give diverse writers more opportunities. She’s busy, ya’ll!

Speaking about Insecure’s seriously delayed return, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys, said:

“Well, Issa became a big movie star! We’re not the first place to deal with this, but when you’re in business with very creative and talented people, there’s a lot more opportunities for people to do things. Issa, I think, partly wanted a break to come back to it fresh.”

Bloys also spoke about the show’s future Emmy hopes when it returns to TV:

“It wasn’t exactly random that we ended up [scheduling the show] in the spring, right before Emmys, so that the show should get the Emmy love that it has deserved.”

Insecure premiered in 2016 and quickly became one of the most popular shows on TV. It centers around late twentysomething Issa Dee as she copes with her approaching 30s realizing that her life is in need of repair in more ways than one. Through romantic setbacks and entanglements, job complacency and tested friendships, she attempts to navigate the fast-paced world of L.A. one mishap at a time.
