Harvey Weinstein Reaches $44 Mill Settlement After Celebs Including Lupita Nyong’o, Angelina Joelie Accuse Him Of Sexual Misconduct
Fallen movie executive Harvey Weinstein has to pay up after some of Hollywood’s biggest stars accused him of sexual assault.
He reached a settlement with a price tag of $44 million Thursday. Weinstein signed on to the agreement with his accusers, the creditors of his previous movie studio The Weinstein Company (TWC), which has gone bankrupt, and the New York attorney general. A judge has yet to approve the settlement, but if it gets the green light $30 million will go toward the women who accused him, his unsecured creditors and former TWC workers. The other $14 million will pay his legal fees.
Weinstein and Bob Weinstein, his brother and business partner, were named in a lawsuit that accused them of sexual harassment, sexual abuse and coercion, and gender discrimination. The lawsuit was filed in February 2018. TWC filed for bankruptcy the following month. It’s not clear who actually filed the lawsuit, but celebrities like Lupita Nyong’o, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Minka Kelly, and Gwyneth Paltrow were just a handful of the dozens who came forward with accusations against him.
While he reached the settlement, he’s not completely in the clear yet. He still has legal woes from other accusers and more upcoming trials. He’s set for a trial this September after a woman accused him of raping an unidentified woman in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013 as well as allegedly performing a sexual act on another woman against her will in 2006.
Weinstein has been facing accusations since October 2017. That’s when dozens of celebrities accused him of sexual assault. Other powerful men in Hollywood also started to be called out, launching the now infamous #MeToo movement.
