Tiffany Haddish Secretly Taped Casting Directors During Her Auditions To Get Feedback: They’d Say I Was Too Ghetto Or Not Urban Enough
Funny lady Tiffany Haddish is one of the busiest and most in-demand actresses in Hollywood these days—but in a new interview she reveals what her past audition process was like, specifically how she got pretty creative to find out feedback while on auditions.
With a slew of new projects lined up and the recent news that her TBS series The Last O.G. co-starring Tracy Morgan has just been renewed for season three, life is pretty good for comedic actress Tiffany Haddish. In a new interview, Haddish gets candid regarding how she went about learning how casting directors felt about her during auditions—and as she put it, it was very “sneaky.”

When asked, “What’s the most amusing or frustrating feedback you’ve gotten going up for a part, and what did you learn from it?” Haddish hilariously admitted this:
“You know what I’d do? I’d put my phone on voice memo and put it in my bag, I’d do the audition, walk out and leave my bag. Then I’d come back and be like, ‘Oh, I forgot my purse.’”
She continued to add the comments she would hear regarding her audition, saying:
“She is not as urban as I thought she’d be.” Or, “She is so ghetto.” “Her boobs aren’t big enough.” “I really think we should just go with a white girl.”
Haddish also explained why she was so curious to hear the feedback of casting directors:
“I’m sneaky! I want to hear so that I can write jokes about it. That and also so that I use it to my advantage and grow. Like all this, “Jeez, she can’t read. She said every word wrong.” And I’m like, “They’re right.” So, I start reading out loud more and practicing and it helps me in the long run. So, sure, they hurt my feelings and sometimes I’m like, “Damn, what a b**ch. I’m never going back in there,” but …”
