Michelle Williams Talks Insecurities With Her Singing Voice: Vocally, I Was Not A Favorite In Destiny’s Child & That Stuck With Me
Michelle Williams has been unmasked as the beloved butterfly on Fox’s “The Masked Singer.”
Now, the Destiny’s Child member has opened up about some of the insecurities she’s experienced throughout her singing career. Before her identity was revealed, the butterfly discussed having insecurities previously. Michelle Williams said,
“Oh yeah, that was no lie. Because I’ve done a lot of gospel, so I’m kind of insecure because mainstream [fans] don’t know my voice.”
She added that she’s had to face her insecurities on social media as well thanks to internet trolls and diehard Destiny’s Child fans.
“Sometimes social media… it’s bad when you read the comments. I like engaging with people on social media. I don’t want to not talk to the people that are being gracious all because there are some mean ones out there. But sometimes before you get to the nice ones you have to get through a couple mean ones. Apparently I don’t have the most commercially appealing voice or whatever. People have their favorites, but vocally I was not a favorite in the group, and that stuck with me.”
She said that it’s something that she still deals with today.
“It’s still a struggle. I’m in a theater show as we speak, and you want to make sure… I hope the people like it. That’s what we signed up for — people are buying their tickets and you want to make sure they’re pleased so they’ll continue to support you on the next move you do. At the same time, you have to go up there and be you, not bend or conform… no, do it the way God gave it to you. Be who you are.”
In a separate interview, she also opened up about her singing insecurities and said that she’s struggled with for quite some time.
“It’s been that way for a long time. I remember growing up in church and how there was a lot of use with me there. I was very active in my church, very active with various choirs and groups and leading things and teaching at a very young age and sometimes you come into the entertainment world and they don’t appreciate that about you.”
She dished on the earlier days of her time in Destiny’s Child, after members LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson exited the group.

She said that joining a group that had already reached a certain level of popularity was what sparked some of the issues she had within herself.
“Of course, I come into a group that already existed, it’s not like I’m a founding member, so it’s kind of like I’ve already got an “X” on my back. That insecurity started 20 years ago if I’m being honest. And it just builds and builds because I feel like, I’m never going to be able to please anybody. Until you can get to a place where you’re like, ‘The people that are for me are for me, they buy my music, they support the shows that I do,’ it might take you a while to get to that point.”
Still, she added that being in a group like Destiny’s Child comes with lots of support on and off the stage.
“No. The good thing about being in a group is that you do have other people to lean on. Being in a group we had fun between the three of us. We had a good time and that translates into the relationship that we have with one another today almost 20 years later.”
She continued and laughed at speculation that Kelly Rowland was the voice behind the butterfly.
“When you’ve been hanging around somebody for 20 years, no matter if I deny it or not, they’re looking at me like, ‘Girl!’ Last night under my Instagram, Kelly called me out by my entire government name. I responded back. I said, ‘Kelly, you know we girls are the queens of secrets of reveals.’ I want her to do the show! I actually hope that she gets the opportunity. I know her schedule has been bonkers, so I hope she does it.”
