Kansas Vs. Kansas State Brawl Turns Ugly, Player Suspended After Attempting To Throw Chair [VIDEO]

 January Madness? On Tuesday (Jan. 21st), top ranked team, Kansas Jayhawks defeated their in-state rival, Kansas State Wildcats in an 81-60 win at Allen Fieldhouse.

At the end of their rival match-up, things turned ugly quickly as Kansas player, Silvio De Sousa was stripped by Antonio Gordon near mid-court as Gordon tried to go in for a quick layup. Jayhawks forward then blocked  his shot which sent the Wildcats freshman to the floor and drew a technical for taunting. The aggressive technical foul ignited a massive brawl that emptied both benches creating chaos on the baseline.

According to reports, De Sousa was preparing to swing a stool when Kansas assistant coach Jerrance Howard grabbed it from his hands.

In addition, both teams were forced from the locker rooms by the officials for Kansas State technical free throws. During the technical free throw attempts, the arena was filled with a chorus of boos from the thousand of fans who were still in the arena.

After their win, Kansas coach Bill Self called the incident an “embarrassment” and said there would be consequences starting with sophomore forward De Sousa,

“I have suspended Silvio De Sousa indefinitely pending the final outcome of the review by KU and the Big 12 Conference. As I said last night, we are disappointed in his actions and there is no place in the game for that behavior.”

Self adds,

“It’s not something to be proud of. What happened showed zero signs of toughness. It’s a sign of immaturity and selfishness more so than toughness.”

Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said after the brawl,

“It should have been avoided. It’s my guys — it’s my fault. They came here wanting to have a game, compete, and we didn’t compete the way we needed to, and probably a little frustration, especially the young guys.”

De Sousa was suspended last season for his role in the ongoing FBI investigation into the university’s violation of the NCAA coaching-responsibility standards. The school reportedly successfully appealed the decision, allowing the junior forward to return to the court.
