Jennifer Lopez Faces Backlash For Wearing #BronxGirlMagic Shirt
Ahead of her big Super Bowl halftime performance, Jennifer Lopez wants to remind us all that she’s still Jenny From the Block. But, being proud of her Bronx, New York roots caused a few side-eyes from social media users this week. On Wednesday (Jan. 29), she posted a picture wearing a graphic tee while en route to her destination. Her shirt reads identical to her tweet:
“@JLo Bronx Girl Magic”

The phrase is a cheeky New York Burrough-spin on the already popular phrase, #BlackGirlMagic. Fans and trolls alike immediately called Jennifer Lopez out for the shirt, accusing her of being dismissive of Black women.

One user screenshot an excerpt of an article highlighting the history of #BlackGirlMagic. It read:
“Black Girl Magic is a movement that was popularized by CaShawn Thompson in 2013. The concept was born as a way to ‘celebrate the beauty, power and resilience of Black women’, as described by Julee Wilson from HuffPost…Please dtop the bs”

Another fellow Latina emphasized the importance of not infiltrating on Black culture.

However, #BronxGirlMagic isn’t a new idea or hashtag. Actress Gina Torres saluted Jennifer Lopez’s rock hard abs by shouting out her burrough-buddy with the hashtag.

Is J. Lo’s shirt harmless or harmful? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
