Kendrick Lamar & The Weeknd Are Being Sued For Their ‘Black Panther’ Hit ‘Pray For Me’
Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd’s song “Pray For Me” is facing a copyright infringement. Yeasayer claimed in his lawsuit that the song, featured in 2018’s Black Panther, is an infringement on their song “Sunrise,” which was released in 2007.
The Brooklyn group, which just parted ways late last year, alleged that “Pray For Me” had “Sunrise’s”
“distinctive choral performance [and] male voices singing in their highest registers, with animated, pulsing vibrato.”
The lawsuit also claims that Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd changed this feature in the song just enough with the alleged
“intent to conceal the infringement.”
Still, they said the similarities are said to have been used 8 times in the song, so much so that Yeasayer said it was
“immediately recognizable.”
According to reports, they want all of the profits associated with “Pray For Me”, and wants any future sales and airplay to be banned.
Black Panther was released on Feb. 16, 2018. It went on to make $1.344 billion in the box office as of May 22, 2018. Kendrick Lamar produced the original songs that were featured in the soundtrack.
