Billy Porter’s Fairy Godmother Character Will Have No Gender: “The Kids Are Ready”
Billy Porter is switching up the traditional Cinderella as we know it. The POSE star is set to play the Fairy Godmother in the live-action Cinderella set for a 2021 release.
And he revealed that the character will not have a gender.
“It hit me when I was on the set last week, how profound it is, that I am playing the Fairy Godmother. They call it the Fab G. Magic has no gender. We are presenting this character as genderless. At least that’s how I’m playing it.”
This Cinderella is a classic fairytale for a new generation. To be able to play this genderless, fabulous fairy godmother – what a gift. Thank you @CBSNews for sitting down with me and catching up about the role?? https://t.co/PgVwnhdthI pic.twitter.com/DZNBmRS3CK

He continued,
“And it’s really powerful. This is a classic fairytale for a new generation. I think the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It’s the grown-ups that are slowing stuff down.”
This isn’t the first time he’s ruffled feathers this year when it comes to kids programming.
He also sparked controversy after he rocked his 2019 Oscars tuxedo gown for the upcoming 51st season of “Sesame Street.”

He later responded to the backlash stating:
“If you don’t like it, don’t watch it.”
He said critics are overexaggerating when they compare his wardrobe to
“perverted demon sex.”
He added,
“Like, what about me singing with a penguin [on the show] has anything to do with what I’m doing in my bedroom? The really interesting thing for me is that that’s what it’s all about when it comes to LGBTQ people — the first thing everyone wants to talk about is how we having sex.”
“Stay out of my bedroom and you will be fine — that is none of your business.”
He was announced as the Fairy Godmother back in October. Singer Camila Cabello is set to play Cinderella.
