Serena Williams Is ‘Shooked’ After Wimbledon Cancels Championship For 1st Time Since 1942
The Wimbledon championship tournament has officially been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Wimbledon announced the monumental news after a two-day emergency meeting. It said on its website:
“It is with great regret that the Main Board of the All England Club (AELTC) and the Committee of Management of The Championships have today decided that The Championships 2020 will be cancelled due to public health concerns linked to the coronavirus epidemic.”
It continues,
“Since the emergence of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in January, we have followed guidance from the UK Government and public health authorities in relation to our year-round operations, alongside developing an understanding of the likely trajectory of the outbreak in the UK. This has enabled analysis of the impact of the Government restrictions on the usual commencement in April of the significant preparations required to stage The Championships, either on the original date of 29 June, or at a later date in the summer of 2020.“
This is the first time the event has been called off since 1945, and 7-time Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams took to Twitter to express her reaction.

Wimbledon was scheduled to be played on the club’s grass courts right outside of London from June 29 to July 12. The next edition of the tournament will be June 28 to July 11, 2021.
As of Wednesday morning, nearly 900,000 coronavirus cases have been diagnosed worldwide while 29,842 of which are in the U.K. The disease has accounted for at least 44,000 deaths around the world, including 2,352 people in the U.K.
