Kobe Bryant – Street Near Staples Center Could Be Renamed After NBA Great
The celebration for the life of Kobe Bryant continues.
A street near Staples Center, a.k.a. “The House That Kobe Built” could be named after him.
Monday (Aug. 24th), marked the first Kobe Bryant Day and Los Angeles City Councilmembers Curren Price and Herb Wesson said they’ve motioned for three miles of Figueroa Street to be renamed to Kobe Bryant Boulevard. The street name would go from Olympic Boulevard near Staples Center to Martin Luther King. Jr. Boulevard.
Price said:
“This is a gift to the City of Los Angeles and to all the Kobe Bryant fans around the world. LA streets will rise in honor of the ‘King of LA.’”
This is the latest way the city has chosen to salute Kobe Bryant and his contribution to the city.
Earlier this month, it was announced that Orange County memorialized today (Aug. 24th) as Kobe Bryant Day, recognizing his Lakers jersey numbers 8 and 24.
Orange County Board Chairwoman Michelle Steel recently made the announcement and said:
“[He was a] treasured member of our community [who] inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up.”
Orange County Supervisor Don Wagner added,
“Kobe Bryant’s life, like each one of us who ever lived, presents moments to celebrate and to condemn. Kobe, like all of us, faced challenges, challenges of his own making and challenges thrown at him by life, that he overcome. Today, we celebrate the effort in overcoming those challenges.”
“If the bad in any life were to forever disqualify, then no one would be able to celebrate the good. So we strike a balance, and on balance here the good recognized in the resolution brought here is worth celebrating.”
Sunday (Aug. 23rd) marked what would’ve been Kobe Bryant’s 42nd birthday. He and his daughter Gianna Bryant were two of nine victims who tragically died in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26th.
