G Herbo Purchased His Old Elementary School Building To Convert Into A Community Center
Chicago Rapper G Herbo (real name Herbert Wright III) made a huge move towards his community by purchasing the building of his old elementary school, Overton Elementary that closed down in 2013 to make way for a new community center.
G Herbo stated,
“This is just about being able to lead by example for the next generation. We’re really just trying to change the narrative and lead by example … and show the next generation that they can do what we’re doing even greater. We’re not saying we’re going to see drastic change tomorrow, but if we keep this up, there’s limitless opportunities and it’s limitless where we can go.”
On Saturday Sep. 19, G Herbo was joined by Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, Joey Purp and other members of Chance the Rapper’s Social Works sponsored Chicago’s annual ‘Year of the Youth’ for a peace walk and back-to-school event in Chicago’s Bronzville.
According to fellow Chicago resident Jesus Montero, rapper Vic Mensa stated,
“The city doesn’t really fund or resource our communities & our schools, and so many schools are shut down, it kind of comes onto us to do the things the community needs.”
Reportedly, G Herbo and his peers passed out over 2,000 backpacks to members of the community filled with school supplies. According to reports, tents were set up where CORE provided COVID-19 testing for the community members and they were also able to receive HIV testing and register for voting.
