Selena Quintanilla’s Family & Netflix Sued For $1M Over Upcoming Selena TV Series
Things are heating up between Moctesuma Esparza and the family of Selena Quintanilla over the rights to her life’s story. The late Queen of Tejano music, who was tragically killed in 1995 by her fan’s club president, Yolanda Saldívar, was an icon with millions of fans globally.
Moctesuma Esparza produced the 1997 film, Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez, and claims that he had the right’s to the singer’s life’s story. The producer is now reportedly suing Selena’s father and sister, Abraham and Suzette Quintanilla as well Netflix for $1M over a new TV series entitled Selena: The Series set to premiere in December.
According to reports, Esparza is suing for damages from an alleged breach of contract, claiming he developed an idea for a television treatment of Selena’s younger years back in the late ’90s, but it was never fully realized.
Selena’s father opened up to People in March stating,
“When Selena passed away, I told my family that I was going to try to keep her memory alive through her music, and 25 years later I think we, as a family, accomplished that.”
Selena’s sister Suzette added,
“We can be fine, and then someone wants to share where they were when they heard that Selena died, and that’s very difficult. I have to dig deep in my soul to figure out why. Then I realize it’s their way of sharing, that they feel that connection, they’re sharing that they felt lost.”
Earlier this year, the late singer’s dad threatened a lawsuit of his own against a Trump supporter attempting to organize a rally at Selena’s statue in her hometown of Corpus Christi, TX.
As Abraham Quintanilla owns the rights to her trademarks, likeness, image, and her name, a legal team for Quintanilla sent a cease and desist letter to the organizer, Joe Michael Perez to demand that he stop associating his daughter’s likeness as well as her songs with a rally in support of President Donald Trump.
