Method Man Turned Down ‘Girls Trip’ Role Because He ‘Didn’t Like’ The Character: I Couldn’t Relate To The Guy
Girls Trip was an undeniable hit when it was released in theaters the summer of 2017. And even though it’s been a while since it made its mark, secrets of the popular film are still being told.
In the latest, rapper turned actor Method Man said he was actually slated to play Stewart Pierce, the cheating husband of Regina Hall’s character Ryan Pierce. Instead, Mike Colter landed the role.
Method Man (real name Clifford Smith) told Jemele Hill on her Unbothered podcast last month, according to Shadow & Act:
“I was supposed to be that a-hole guy that [Mike] Colter played. So when I read the script, I was like I feel like I’ve gotta take a shower. It was like I couldn’t relate to the guy. I like characters I feel like I can hang out with…But this dude was like, ugh. I didn’t like him. I’m sorry, I just didn’t like him.”
Method Man currently stars as Davis Maclean, on Starz hit series Power Book II: Ghost.
Girls Trip marked Tiffany Haddish’s breakout role as she starred alongside Jada Pinkett-Smith, Regina Hall, and Queen Latifah. While she recently said that she only made $80,000 in the first movie, she suggested the studio said the cast wanted too much money for the sequel. The studio was reportedly waiting for the script to move forward, and Tracy Oliver, who served as co-writer for the first one with Kenya Barris, was initially ready to, but Tiffany Haddish previously said the studio had a change of heart.
“Then it was like, ‘Oh, you guys want too much money,’”
Interestingly enough, the four leading ladies caught up with each other during the nationwide quarantine and spoke for more than two hours. There, they decided they would work on getting the film done themselves. Tiffany Haddish added that they might take a different route depending on the response for the sequel.
“We might decide not to even make it ‘Girls Trip.’ Maybe we’ll do a different story just in case no one wants to make ‘Girls Trip 2.’”
