Mike Tyson’s Claims That He & Evander Holyfield Will Fight In May Are NOT True, Tyson’s Rep Says
Update #2 (March 25th): Mike Tyson appeared to have a change of heart after turning down a fight with Evander Holyfield.
He said on Instagram Live with Haute Living earlier this week that he and the fellow boxing great will face off on May 29th, despite previously bowing out of the fight over money negotiations.
“I just want everybody to know the fight is on with me and Holyfield. Holyfield’s a humble man, I know that and he’s a man of God but I’m God’s man. Listen, I’m going to be successful May 29.”
But now, a rep for Mike Tyson has shut down his statement, clarifying that the fight will not take place.
They said, according to TMZ, that Mike Tyson wasn’t aware that neither side had reached a deal to agree on, and until that happens, the fight is on hold.
Original Story (March 22nd): Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson won’t be facing off after all.
The two boxing greats were supposed to go head to head in what would’ve been their third fight against each other. But Evander Holyfield’s team says it’s not happening due to failed negotiations.
Kris Lawrence told TMZ,
“We thought this was a done deal but it quickly fell apart when Tyson’s people declined all offers.”
Lawrence explained,
“We were negotiating in good faith all along and it appears we just ended up wasting our time.”
Mike Tyson previously sparked speculation that he and Evander Holyfield would be fighting when he said on his podcast earlier this month he’d be getting into the ring in a must-see event at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. The event was scheduled for May 29th.
While he didn’t name-drop the person he’d be fighting, many assumed it was Evander Holyfield, which it looks like it was. Evander Holyfield’s team said there were “intense negotiations for months”, only for nothing to come of it.
They added in a statement,
“Team Holyfield sincerely believed a deal was imminent, especially after the Hard Rock threw its support behind the project, and there were multiple other offers conveyed to Team Tyson. However, Team Tyson’s demands recently became untenable, and not what Mike Tyson had originally agreed on in direct conversations with Holyfield.”
Insiders said Evander and Mike spoke one on one and agreed to split the profit down the middle. But Mike allegedly switched things around and wanted more money.
Evander’s people said they told Mike he would get $25 million for the fight, but he still refused.
Evander is still up for fighting if he and Mike can reach an agreement.
The last time they boxed one another was in 1997 when Mike infamously bit Evander’s ear.
