Lizzo Addresses ‘Fat-Phobic Behaviors’ In Body Positivity Movement: It’s Almost A Negative Space
Lizzo recently got candid about her issue with the body positivity movement.
During an interview with The Cut, Lizzo was asked about the movement’s shortcomings–specifically when it comes to “Black and brown fat women.” The “Truth Hurts” singer claimed that the body positivity movement is:
“[T]urning into something that is almost a negative space for fat bodies and brown bodies.”
She continued,
“There’s even a lot of very triggering and fat-phobic behaviors that have come from the body-positive movement. There are things like body checking, and comparing sizes, or shaming sides. Like, ‘Oh, it’s midsize girls’ turn; big girls, you’ve had your moment.’ Huh? It’s not about a moment. It’s about this system that oppresses big bodies.”
Lizzo goes on to say that she is excited for the day to come where her body is not viewed as a “political” statement and, instead, as nothing more than a body. She specifically describes her mindset on the matter as:
“This is my body, nothing to see here. Keep it moving.”
She elaborates,
“I hope that I can post the kinds of materials that I post, showing my body and showing my rolls or whatever. And people are just like, ‘Okay. Beautiful picture. Next.’ Instead of, like, ‘Oh my gosh, a full-figured body. How strikingly political!‘ It don’t gotta be all of that!”
This is not the first time Lizzo has addressed issues within the body positivity movement. In an interview with Vogue last year, she claimed to be “body-normative” rather than body positive. She stated:
“I think it’s lazy for me to just say I’m body positive at this point. It’s easy. I would like to be body-normative. I want to normalize my body.”
