Oprah Receives Oscar for Philanthropic Efforts

Saturday evening, at the third annual Governors Awards, 57-year-old Oprah Winfrey received the Academy of Motion Picture’s Arts & Science’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, for her philanthropic efforts. The ceremony took place at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland.While receiving the award she said,

“I never imagined receiving an Oscar, especially for doing what is part of my calling, part of my being. If you are not a former colored girl born in Mississippi in 1954….it is impossible for you to know what this journey has meant.”

James Earl Jones and Dick Smith also received awards. [People]
