The Weeknd Will Star In & Co-Create New HBO Series ‘The Idol’
The Weeknd is ready to extend his portfolio and will be trying his hand at acting. According to reports, The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, has a drama series with Sam Levinson, the creator of the hit show Euphoria, in development at HBO.
The upcoming show is called ‘The Idol’ and The Weeknd, 31, is set to star in, co-write, and executive produce the series. Limited details about ‘The Idol’ have been released so far, but the series will reportedly follow a female pop singer who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult.

The Weeknd made headlines last November after he announced he was boycotting the Grammys. The ‘Blinding Lights’ singer shared via his Twitter he was skipping out on the music ceremony because he felt snubbed by the Awards committee over his After Hours album not receiving any nominations for the 2021 Grammy Awards.

The Weeknd isn’t the first artist to call out the award show and the Grammys ultimately decided to implement new changes to its processes, which included the elimination of secret committees. This means nominations will be determined by a majority vote of Academy members, rather than mysterious committees that exist behind the scenes. However, even with the change, The Weeknd shared in a statement to The New York Times that his boycott still stands. He said,
“Even though I won’t be submitting my music, the Grammys’ recent admission of corruption will hopefully be a positive move for the future of this plagued award and give the artist community the respect it deserves with a transparent voting process.”
