News Anchor Don Lemon Calls Ex-Friend Jussie Smollett A Liar Following Guilty Verdict: He Had To Make Up Too Many Lies
Jussie Smollett isn’t the only one disregarding past friendships.
News anchor Don Lemon, 55, reportedly isn’t buying the details his ex-friend Jussie Smollett, 39, divulged in his false police report trial. Not too long after Jussie Smollett’s guilty verdict was announced, Don Lemon expressed his disagreement with Jussie’s statements and actions. He said:
“He had to make up too many lies as to why he didn’t want to do certain things.”
He continued:
“To cover. Like another lie – and I guess he got caught up in that because he took the stand himself.”
He added:
“He got angry with the prosecutor as the prosecutor poked holes in his story – calling the only other witnesses liars.”
Don Lemon also stated that he felt the verdict Jussie received was justified. He said:
“I think it’s the proper result.”
Jussie kicked off his shocking testimony on Monday (Dec. 6). The former Empire cast member mentioned a few names, including Empire director Lee Daniels and Don Lemon. According to reports, Jussie claimed that Don was using his resources to give him a play-by-play of what the Chicago police department had to say about the case via text message. One of the messages allegedly warned Jussie that things weren’t looking good on his end. Don has not responded to these allegations.

Don has reportedly said that when the staged attack occurred in Jan. 2019, he texted Jussie every day. He allegedly cut ties with him when Jussie was first accused of fabricating the incident.
Things started to spin out of control for Jussie Smollett when he told police that he was attacked outside of his Chicago apartment complex in Jan. 2019. According to Jussie, he was brutally beaten by two men in ski masks. He alleged that they hurled out homophobic and racial slurs as they brutalized him. One of the alleged insults was “MAGA,” a reference to then-president Donald Trump’s campaign slogan. The city of Chicago later accused Jussie of staging the incident and took legal action against him.

The cases were dropped, but prosecutor Kim Foxx’s alleged bias against Jussie prompted a further investigation. In February 2020, he was indicted for a second time, receiving six counts for making false police reports. Jury selection for the trial began in Nov. 2021.

On Dec. 9, Jussie Smollett was declared guilty of five out of six counts of disorderly conduct, though he is not expected to face jail time.
