EXCLUSIVE: Dame Dash Says Kanye West Is Our ‘New Michael Jackson,’ Claimed The Rapper’s Social Media Behavior Is Our Karma For Ignoring Him, & Explained Why His Roc-A-Fella Deal Took So Long
In an exclusive interview with theJasmineBRAND, hip-hop mogul Dame Dash spoke about rapper-producer Kanye West. He compared his former artist to Michael Jackson and explained how the world is receiving karma for ignoring Kanye. Dash also traveled back to 2002 when a young Ye was eager to become a part of the Roc-A-Fella roster.
After the debut of Kanye West’s Netflix documentary Jeen-Yuhs, it was necessary to get more insight into the megastar from Roc-A-Fella co-founder Damon “Dame” Dash. When asked how he felt about part 1 of the docu-series, Dash replied:
“I thought it was good. I thought it was real good. Good footage…I was glad it got done. I thought he did a good job.”
He went on to say that he practically inspired the project:
“I taught them that. Not to say that I taught Coodie to do that, but I was always the guy that ran around with the camera because I knew that these moments were priceless. Just a matter of, you know, when it was time, so I was glad that they actually took that advice and did that. Or at least followed the example. I got a lot of footage, but it’s just the time. It’s always about the time.”
Dash said that Kanye is the “new Michael Jackson,” comparing his public presence to that of the King of Pop’s.
“I think this is the right time for [the documentary] because you get insight into who Kanye is, especially because he’s so public. He’s turned into our new Michael Jackson. Whether that’s negative or positive, but that’s just is what it is. I wasn’t expecting all that from Kanye.”
He added:
“Every move he makes, everybody’s paying to him. Now he’s triggering the world.”

Upon the release of Kanye’s DONDA 2, the rapper has been unusually active on Instagram. He’s made several posts about his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, their four children, and whatever else comes to mind. According to Dash, his social media behavior is the world’s karma and a testament to Kanye’s genius.
“Every time he has a headline, there’s a sneaker to buy. So, what you’re looking at–when you see a Kanye–is a free man. Free to say what he wants, when he wants, and everybody has to tolerate it. It’s karma for the rest of the world.”
He continued:
“Whoever ignored him before, you have to pay attention to him now. Whoever bullied him before, you now have to work for him. [It’s the] ultimate revenge. And everything on his mind, y’all got to write about it because it makes you money.”
He mentioned that, while Kanye’s way wasn’t “his approach,” he still approved of it.
“His revenge is sweet. I’m not mad at it. It’s just not my approach…but if you look at [my approach], it’s almost the same thing.”

Some parts of JEEN-YUHS covered Kanye’s difficult journey to becoming a signed artist. The rapper, who’d already established himself as a producer, felt that the Roc-A-Fella staff was dragging their feet on his record deal. Dash denied being hesitant at the time.
“It didn’t take us long [to sign him] at all.”
He stated that Kanye assumed they were prolonging the process because he saw the situation from an artist’s perspective.
“When I watched it, I was like, ‘I don’t know what he was tripping for, I said I’m giving him a deal.’ It was just paperwork. The bottom line is if I say something we don’t have to talk about it no more.”
