Jussie Smollett Ordered To Be Released On Bond Until Appeal Decided
It looks like the attempts by Jussie Smollett‘s legal team to have him released from jail have paid off. A court has reportedly ordered that he be released on bond during the appeal of his disorderly conduct conviction for lying to police about an alleged hate crime.
His attorney released a statement about his release.

Jussie Smollett, 39, had been sentenced on March 10 to 150 days in jail and required to pay a $25,000 fine and $120,000 in restitution to the city of Chicago.
The court order comes after lawyers for Jussie Smollett requested an emergency release for the embattled star due to “vicious threats” toward him and his family, including one from a man who wished sexual assault on Smollett. Celebrities such as his former Empire co-star Taraji P. Henson and his sister and Lovecraft Country actor Jurnee Smollett joined the calls for his release.
Smollett told police he was out in the wee hours of January 29, 2019, when he was attacked by two masked men. He claimed they hurled racist and homophobic words at him, poured a liquid thought to be bleach on him, and put a noose around his neck. From their investigation, Chicago police determined Smollett had lied about the attack and charged him with disorderly conduct in connection to the police report he filed.
Smollett, who was written off of Empire as a result, has continued to deny the claims against him.
“I did not do this, and I am not suicidal, and if anything happens to me when I go there, I did not do it to myself, and you must all know that,” he said after he was sentenced.
It is unclear how soon Smollett will be released from jail. The Jasmine Brand reached out to representatives for him for comment but did not immediately hear back.
