Mero Claims That Despite Recent Reports, His Split From Desus Was In The Works For A While: We’ve Wanted To Pursue Separate Interests For Over A Year

The Kid Mero recently broke his silence on ending his long-time partnership with Desus Nice and why their late-night comedy series abruptly ended after four seasons.

Reports recently confirmed that the late-night show “Desus & Mero” is officially ending after four seasons at Showtime. In addition to that, the comedic pair will be pursuing separate creative endeavors and going their separate ways moving forward.

Reportedly, the duo separated over issues relating to their long-time manager Victor Lopez and his involvement with their Showtime series.

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Basic!” podcast, Joel Martinez, best known as The Kid Mero, claimed the split from his late-night partner has been in the works for a while. He said the popular TV and podcast personalities signed separate overall agreements to allow them to work on their own projects. The Kid Mero explained:

“Desus and I had discussed pursuing separate interests over a year prior to the show coming to an end and that conversation solidified us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to operate independent of one another.”

According to reports, Mero said it wouldn’t have been the same to force a partnership with Desus Nice, real name Daniel Baker, “that’s coming to a natural end.” He admitted that it was a hard decision and the intent was to go their own ways in a “supportive” way. Mero didn’t specify who the Bodega Boys signed overall deals with, however, he did mention that he planned to focus on writing. He said:

“I started writing so [I want to] dig a lot more into that, features, series, books, I want to get into all of that.”

The two gained popularity with their “Bodega Boys” podcast, hosting over 250 episodes which launched in 2015. They also hosted Complex TV’s web series “Desus vs. Mero” in 2014. From 2016 to 2018 Viceland’s “Desus & Mero” series aired for two seasons. The show was then moved in 2019 to Showtime, becoming the premium cabler’s first-ever late-night show.
