Michael Jordan Releases Touching Statement Following NBA Icon Paul Silas’ Passing: He Was One Of The All-Time Great People In Our Game

NBA phenomenon Paul Silas has died at the age of 79.

On Sunday (Dec. 11), the association’s commissioner, Adam Silver, took to their official Twitter account to announce the heartbreaking news of Paul Silas’ passing.

In the tweet, he wrote:

“We mourn the passing of former NBA All-Star and head coach Paul Silas. Paul’s lasting contributions to the game are seen through the many players and coaches he inspired, including his son, Rockets head coach Stephen Silas. We send our deepest condolences to Paul’s family.”

Following the notion of Paul Silas’ death, Michael Jordan — who currently serves as the chairman of the legendary player-turned-coach’s old coaching home, the Charlotte Hornets — shared a sentimental statement on the organization’s behalf.

“Our Hornets family mourns the passing of Paul Silas. Paul was an incredible leader and motivator who served as our hed coach on two occasions. He combined the knowledge developed over nearly 40 years an an NBA player and coach with an innate understanding of how to mix discipline with his never-ending positivity.”

He continued by remembering Silas for his infectious aura that will forever impact each and every basketball ground he’s played on and/or team he’s led.

“On or off the court, Paul’s enthusiastic and engaging personality was accompanied by an anecdote for every occasion. He was one of the all-time great people in our game, and he will be missed. My thoughts, and the thoughts of our entire organization, are with his wife, Carolyn; his children, Paula and Stephen; and the entire Silas family.”

Along with Michael Jordan, other heavy hitters within the sports field spoke out to give their condolences, priding Silas on how much of an asset he was to everyone around him.

Former baller, now businessman Magic Johnson said,

“RIP to Hall of Famer, 3X NBA Champion, and my guy Paul Silas. Paul made a huge contribution to the game of basketball and will be sorely missed! Cookie and I send our prayers and condolences to the entire Silas family.”

Basketball executive Billy King also added:

“Paul Silas was a great man, basketball player, and coach. He loved the game and the way it was played. He always wanted his teams to play the way he played, unselfish and tough. He was a winner on and off the court. Sending prayers to his family and friends. R.I.P. Paul!”

Born in Prescott, Arkansas, Paul Silas’ professional career in basketball ignited in 1964, when he was drafted by the St. Louis Hawks. The three-time NBA championship winner went on to become one of the most notable players in the industry with many accolades to show for it.

Of course, he ultimately carried his legacy by guiding others to the goal, making a note-worthy name for himself as a coach to some of the NBA’s biggest stars to date.
