Sherri Shepherd Says Jail ‘Was A Classroom’ While Reflecting On The Short Time She Spent Behind Bars Over Unpaid Tickets
Sherri Shepherd is somewhat grateful for spending 8 days behind bars.
In a recent exclusive interview with PageSix’s Tashara Jones, the talk show host credited being jailed in the early ‘90s as one of the reasons she’s successful in her career. Sherri Shepherd said:
“Yeah, I went to jail for not paying my tickets. At the time I did not think being in jail was a good moment, but looking back I learned to pay all my bills.”

Reportedly, the 55-year-old served eight days in jail due to her $10,000 debt in unpaid moving violations. Sherri Shepherd continued:
“Jail, that was a classroom… it was a life lesson, and now I pay my bills on time.”
The former co-host of “The View” recalled:
“One of the girls in jail said, ‘Leave Sherri alone because she’s gonna be somebody and we are going to be here for the rest of our lives,’ literally that’s what she used to say.”
She added:
“Her name was Shelby and she came to both my weddings when I got out. But sometimes people see things in you that you don’t see yourself, and when she said those words, ‘Sherri is gonna be somebody,’ I never thought that for myself. So I just knew that something was going to happen.”

As you may recall, the Chicago native premiered her self-titled talk show last September with the Debmar-Mercury production company. The hit series came after she spent some time substituting for Wendy Williams on her show before it was canceled after 13 seasons. Unfortunately, Wendy Williams, 58, was absent from her iconic purple chair for the final season due to her ongoing battle with battled Graves’s disease (an autoimmune disorder).

Shepherd has mentioned in the past that her talk show was inspired by a few legends in talk television history. As previously reported, she said media moguls Oprah Winfrey, 69, and Ellen DeGeneres, 65, are intertwined in the structure behind her show. Shepherd said:
“A little bit of Ellen.”
She added:
“A little bit of inspiration of Oprah, a lot of the laughter of Ellen and put that together, and then you got Sherri and I am like, let’s go!”
