Angela Bassett To Receive Honorary Oscar Following ‘Black Panther’ Snub

Famed actress Angela Bassett will finally be honored with an Oscar!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced that Angela Bassett, 64, will receive an honorary Oscar at this year’s Governors Awards. The golden statute will reportedly be presented to the honoree at the 14th annual ceremony on Saturday, November 18, 2023, in Los Angeles.

Academy President Janet Yang said of the movie star,

“The Academy’s Board of Governors is thrilled to honor four trailblazers who have transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and movie fans. Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting.”

According to reports, The Honorary Award is,

“to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy.”

You may recall that Angela Bassett was nominated for “Best Supporting Actress” at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.

As previously reported, the veteran actress received her nomination for portraying Queen Ramonda in the 2022 Marvel film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forver.” Bassett made history as the first Marvel star to ever receive an Academy nomination for their performance in a comic book adaptation. In addition, the entertainer is the first woman, and person of color to be nominated for the prestigious recognition for their performance in a comic book adaptation.

Despite making history, Bassett did not win the award. To many fans’ surprise, actress Jamie Lee Curtis was awarded the Oscar for her performance in the film “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”

This marked the second time Bassett was nominated for an Oscar. Her first nomination was for “Best Actress” due to her portrayal of Tina Tuner in the 1993 biopic “What’s Love Got To Do With It?”
