Quavo Launches $100K Grant Program To Help Combat Gun Violence In Honor Of Late Rapper Takeoff
Quavo is turning his grief into purpose.
The Grammy-nominated rapper started a $100K grant program. It’s part of a partnership with his Rocket Foundation, launched in honor of his nephew and fellow Migos rapper Takeoff, who was fatally gunned down in 2022. Of the $100K, the grant program will reportedly award $10,000 to 10 Atlanta organizations doing the work to minimize “community violence.”

The announcement comes after Quavo, born Quavious Marshall, met with political figures like Vice President Kamala Harris in September 2023 to raise awareness about community-driven solutions to gun violence. The next day, he spoke on a panel about ending gun violence during the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.
Applications to apply for the grants are open now through April 21. Organizations will know if they’ve been awarded the grant on Takeoff’s birthday, June 18. June also marks National Gun Awareness Month.

In November 2022, Takeoff, born Kirsnick Ball, was shot and killed outside of a private party at a bowling center he and Quavo attended in Houston, Texas. He was 28. Houston police have said the gunfire followed a disagreement over a game of dice but that Takeoff was not involved.

Takeoff
In the wake of Takeoff’s death, Quavo became a staunch advocate for gun violence, which included starting the Rocket Foundation. According to the foundation’s website, its mission is to “uplift and invest in interventions that effectively reduce community violence so neighborhoods can thrive.”

Takeoff was the youngest member of the Migos. The Grammy-nominated rap trio also featured his cousin Offset.
