Michael Jackson’s Estate Says His Mother, Katherine Jackson, Has Received $55 Million Since His 2009 Death
Update (March 22): Michael Jackson’s estate wants his mother, Katherine Jackson, to pay her own attorney fees amid an ongoing legal battle. The estate filed legal documents obtained by TMZ and said she can afford to pay the costs as she’s received $55 million since he died in 2009. The estate alleged that she gets an allowance of $160,000 a month. That with other cashouts equals $33 million total.
The estate also said it makes sure Katherine Jackson lives a comfortable life and gave her more than $15 million to purchase and make renovations on her home. It said it also pays for her transportation and amenities like a chef, security, and a private gardener.
Original Story (March 21): A little family drama is inevitable.
According to reports, Michael Jackson’s youngest son, Blanket Jackson, born Prince Michael Jackson II, is taking his grandmother to court over his dad’s estate. The rift between the 22-year-old and Katherine Jackson centers around the legal fees she’s racked up trying to stop the executors of the “Rock with You” singer’s estate from going through with a major business venture. As previously reported, the deal’s details have been kept under wraps. However, it’s highly speculated that it has something to do with the reported $600 million agreement the estate made with Sony to sell roughly half of Michael Jackson’s music catalog.
Initially, Blanket Jackson and his 93-year-old grandmother teamed up to legally fight the secret deal. Unfortunately for the family members, it’s assumed they lost whatever they were battling as reports surfaced in February that Sony finalized the hefty music purchase. Blanket Jackson was ready to take the “L” and keep pushing, however, Katherine Jackson filed an appeal, which is what her grandson has taken an issue with.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Blanket feels Katherine Jackson has a slim chance of winning the appeal and has asked the court to block the estate from paying her legal fees in the case.
Purportedly, Blanket also argues that continuing the legal battle would not benefit the trust’s beneficiaries –including himself – and could depreciate its value with expensive legal bills. Allegedly, Katherine Jackson receives a seven-figure allowance for the year from the estate, and Blanket seemingly believes she should use her own funds to pay her attorneys.
However, he did ask the court to “use its best judgment” in allowing Katherine to be reimbursed for “reasonable attorney’s fees” she accumulated amid the initial case.
At the time of this report, a judge has yet to rule.
