Megan Thee Stallion Says People Expected Her To Just ‘Take The Punches’ As She Speaks On Unwarranted Backlash Following Tory Lanez Shooting

The comeback is always a beautiful thing!

Megan Thee Stallion is definitely in her winning era. The Grammy Award-winning rapper kicked off the New Year by releasing her Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping single “Hiss.” In February she inked a deal with Warner Music Group that allows her to maintain her independence as an artist and own her masters and publishing. She also recently launched a collab with Nike and had to add more dates to her highly-anticipated “Hot Girl Summer Tour” as tickets are flying off the shelf.

Life is looking great for Megan Thee Stallion and the 29-year-old has come a long way from her traumatic July 2020 shooting incident. In case you missed it, The “Wanna Be” artist was shot in the foot by her former friend Tory Lanez, 31, following a party at Kylie Jenner’s house. Despite the evidence against Tory Lanez, and the fact that he was ultimately sentenced to 10 years in prison for the shooting, Megan Thee Stallion was ostracized by many of her music peers and bashed by internet trolls for speaking out on what occurred that summer night.

During a recent magazine cover interview, Megan addressed the way she was treated and shared,

“A lot of people didn’t treat me like I was human for a long time.”

She continued,

“I feel like everybody was always used to me being the fun and happy party girl. I watched people build me up, tear me down, and be confused about their expectations of me. As a Black woman, as a darker Black woman, I also feel like people expect me to take the punches, take the beating, take the lashings, and handle it with grace. But I’m human.”

Speaking on how dark things were for her, Megan said,

“Before I went onstage, I would be crying half the time because I didn’t want to [perform], but I also didn’t want to upset my fans. I didn’t want to get [out] from under the covers. I stayed in my room. I would not turn the lights on. I had blackout curtains. I didn’t want to see the sun.”

Thankfully, Megan sought the help that was needed to pull herself out of the slump.

“I knew I wasn’t myself. It took me a while to acknowledge that I was depressed. But once I started talking to a therapist, I was able to be truthful with myself.”

In addition to therapy, Megan ended a relationship that wasn’t beneficial and deleted social media from her phone to avoid negative comments from naysayers. She also started a fitness journey, sharing

“Working on myself made me get into working out because I needed to focus my energy somewhere else. I used working out to escape and to get happy.”
